Powder Mountain's Safety Policies

Boundary and Avalanche Closure Policy

At Powder, if you duck a rope or go past a closure sign, you will lose your pass. Pass suspensions range from one week to permanent removal, depending on the severity of the violation.

Learn More

Powder Mountain Road

Traction devices or 4-wheel/all-wheel drive cars are REQUIRED on SR-158 during severe winter weather storms. Drivers will be subjected to a penalty if these requirements are not met. UDOT or law enforcement agencies determine when road conditions require the use of these devices or requirements. Travelers are notified via road signs or message boards.

SR-158 is closed to self-shuttling. Self-shuttling is a safety hazard, and violators caught will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law for trespassing and theft of services. Furthermore, violators will lose their ticket or pass and be banned from the resort.

The condition of SR-158 can change drastically between the bottom and the top. In snowy conditions, you are required to have 4-wheel or all-wheel drive/snow tires/chains.

While descending the road, downshift into low gears to control your speed and avoid overheating your vehicle's brakes.

Always remember that we provide bus service in conjunction with UTA, so consider leaving the driving to a professional.

Skiing Adjacent to SR-158

Powder Mountain provides a unique experience for our guests in which you will be traveling adjacent to a State Highway. Powder Country and Woody’s World come with a risk of skiing or riding next to or having to cross this active road.

Skiers and Riders who enter these areas (enter only through the gates) do so at their own risk and understand they need to anticipate the risk of roads and vehicular traffic.

Cross the road at designated road crossings when possible. These Road Crossings are indicated by signs that remind you to Stop and Prepare for the Road Crossing.

Winter Season Uphill Policy

Powder Mountain only allows uphill travel in designated areas and along approved routes. Uphill travel is permitted in Lefty’s Canyon, James Peak, Lightning Ridge, and Baldy. Terrain must be open for skiing and riding and may not be accessed when closed or outside resort operating hours. A lift ticket or season pass is required when skiing or riding on any Powder Mountain property in any fashion. If you are unfamiliar with these areas, please contact Ski Patrol.

Off-Season Uphill Policy

Due to ongoing construction projects on the mountain, we will not permit any uphill travel or winter recreation activities. This includes activities such as ski touring, splitboarding, sledding or tubing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, hiking, or self-shuttling in Woody’s World during the closure. We kindly ask that all individuals respect this closure and refrain from accessing the Mountain's private property until further notice. Your cooperation and understanding during this period are greatly appreciated.

Backpack and Child Carrier Policy

Powder Mountain requires all packs to be removed before loading a lift and carried on the rider's lap.

Powder Mountain does not permit skiing or riding with child carriers. In accordance with National Safety Standards regarding chairlift operations (ANSI B77 Passenger Ropeway Standards), all passengers should be able to self-evacuate with the assistance of the Powder Mountain Patrol Staff. Because of safety concerns related to evacuation, passengers should not have impediments such as child carriers.

Tree Wells and Deep Snow Safety

Skiing and snowboarding off the groomed runs and in deep powder is one of the most exciting and appealing parts of our sport. However, if you decide to leave the groomed trails, you are voluntarily accepting the risk of a deep snow immersion accident.
A deep snow or tree well immersion accident occurs when a skier or rider falls into an area of deep unconsolidated snow and becomes immobilized and suffocates. Deaths resulting from these kinds of accidents are referred to as an SIS hazard or Snow Immersion Suffocation.

Terrain Awareness

Powder Mountain’s expansive layout includes both summer and winter roads and trails that cross ski terrain. These routes can present variable conditions such as flats, rises, steep banks, and sudden drop-offs depending on snow coverage. Always ski and ride in control, stay aware of your surroundings, and take time to familiarize yourself with the mountain. Be prepared for changing terrain and transitions as you navigate areas where roads and trails intersect with ski runs.

Changing Weather Conditions

Conditions in the mountains can change rapidly. Visibility, snow conditions, and weather can also change rapidly. Consider these conditions while traveling on the mountain.

How to Ride the Lift Safely

Safely riding chairlifts is an essential part of your mountain experience. Follow these simple steps to load, ride, and unload safely, and to help ensure a smooth experience for everyone on the lift.

Riding lifts safely is part of your Responsibility Code, which is the foundation of safe skiing and riding at Powder Mountain.

1. Before You Load

  • Prepare early. Remove pole straps from your wrists, take off your backpack, and ensure all gear is secure.
  • Watch the loading area and follow lift attendants’ instructions at all times.
  • Stand on the marked line and be ready to sit when the chair reaches you.
  • If you need extra time or assistance, ask the lift operator to slow the lift before you load. They will gladly help ensure a comfortable and safe boarding process.
  • If you are new, riding with children, or have any concerns, let the lift operator know before loading.
  • If you are not ready to load, let a chair go by. Snowboarders, please make sure your back foot is out of the binding
  • Do not use  while under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Read and follow all signage and warnings
  • All passengers who use an aerial tramway shall be responsible for their own embarkation, riding, and disembarkation. They shall be presumed to have sufficient ability, physical dexterity, and/or personal assistance to negotiate and to be evacuated from the aerial tramway safely.

2. Loading the Chair

  • Look over your shoulder as the chair approaches, then sit back firmly when it makes contact.
  • Keep your skis or snowboard pointed straight ahead.
  • Communicate clearly with your group to ensure everyone is ready before lowering the bar.
  • Lower the restraint bar once seated.
  • If you are riding with children or smaller individuals who cannot reach the bar, please assist them in lowering it.
  • Remain seated and keep your gear under control for the entire ride.

3. During the Ride

  • Stay seated and keep the bar lowered until you near the unloading area.
  • Keep backpacks and equipment close to your body or in your lap.
  • Avoid bouncing, swinging, or turning in the chair.
  • Enjoy the ride, stay seated, and remain alert as you approach the top.
  • If you need extra time to unload at the top, notify the lift operator before you reach the unloading area by giving the operator a “thumbs down” . The operator will slow the chair to help you unload safely.

4. Unloading the Lift

  • Raise the restraint bar only when instructed or when you reach the “Raise Bar” sign.
  • Keep your skis or board pointed straight and prepare to slide off smoothly.
  • Stand up when your equipment reaches the “Unload Here” sign, push forward smoothly, and slide straight off the chair.
  • Move quickly away from the unload area to make room for other guests.
  • If you fall, move to the side as soon as possible. Lift operators will stop the lift if necessary to assist you.

Need Help?

Our Lift Operations team is here to assist. If you are uncertain about loading, unloading, or lift procedures, simply ask an attendant before you ride.

Your awareness and cooperation keep our mountain safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Authorized and Unauthorized Sliding Devices

Powder Mountain welcomes a variety of commercially manufactured skiing and riding equipment that can be safely loaded, unloaded, and used on our lifts and terrain. All devices must have functional brakes or retention systems. Homemade, modified, or non-standard equipment is not permitted. Not all devices are compatible with every lift, so please follow lift signage and team instructions.

Accepted Equipment

Snowboards
Must have a secure retention system. Standard snowboard bindings qualify. A leash is strongly encouraged.

Skis
Must have functional brakes or a retention device that remains engaged.

Telemark Skis
Require a working brake or retention device at all times.

Snowskates
Must have metal edges and a secure retention device. Required on lifts and terrain.

Monoskis and Sit Skis
Allowed when equipped with functional brakes or a retention device. Access may vary. Check with Lift Operations or Ski Patrol.

• A leash is used at all times on the slopes
• Not homemade or modified

Not Permitted

• Homemade or altered equipment
• Sleds, toboggans, saucers, or inflatable snow toys
• Devices without brakes or retention systems
• Equipment that cannot be safely loaded or unloaded from a chairlift

Adaptive Equipment

Powder Mountain supports adaptive skiing and riding. Guests using adaptive equipment should check in with Ski Patrol or Lift Operations for guidance on lift access, loading procedures, and available accommodations. Reasonable assistance will be provided when operationally feasible.

Helmet Safety

Wearing a helmet is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce the risk of head injuries while skiing or riding. At Powder Mountain, we strongly encourage all to wear a properly fitted helmet every time they are on the snow, from those just learning their first turns to our most experienced riders and skiers exploring advanced terrain.

Helmets provide important protection in the event of a fall, collision, or unexpected hazard, helping support a safer and more enjoyable mountain experience for everyone.

It is important to understand that helmets do have limitations. They are designed to reduce the severity of certain impacts, not prevent all injuries. High-speed collisions, impacts with large objects, and extreme forces may exceed what a helmet can protect against. As speed increases, so does the force of impact and the likelihood of losing control, making responsible riding and speed management essential for guests of all ability levels.

Choosing to control your speed, stay aware of your surroundings, and use a properly fitted helmet all work together to reduce risk and help ensure a positive experience for all who visit Powder Mountain.

To learn more about helmet safety, please click here: https://skisafety.us/helmet-safety

Drone and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Policy

Recreational drone and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle use by any guest or member of the public, for any reason, is not permitted on or over any Powder Mountain property.  Commercial drone Unmanned Aerial Vehicle use is by permission only and must receive prior written consent from Powder Mountain management. All requests for approval of commercial drone use should be directed to mshaum@powder.org and marketing@powder.org.

Dog Policy

Powder Mountain loves dogs, but for the safety of our guests, we do not permit them to ride the lifts or use the ski trails. Dogs are allowed in other outdoor public areas but must be on a leash, and owners are required to clean up after their dogs.

Service Animal Policy

Powder Mountain strives to be a welcoming and accessible resort and recreation destination.  Customer and Member Service Animals are prohibited on chairlifts and on skiable terrain.  Service Animals that are not trained to be rescued and evacuated from chairlifts and skiable terrain present a risk to Powder Mountain Ski Patrol and other patrons.

Accessibility Policy

Powder Mountain partners with Ogden Valley Adaptive Sports to provide access to all guests on the mountain. For more information, please visit ogdenvalleyadaptivesports.org. If any additional ADA accommodations are needed, please email mshaum@powder.org.

Snowboards
Must have a secure retention system. Standard snowboard bindings qualify. A leash is strongly encouraged.

Skis
Must have functional brakes or a retention device that remains engaged.

Telemark Skis
Require a working brake or retention device at all times.

Monoskis and Sit Skis
Allowed when equipped with functional brakes or a retention device. Access may vary. Check with Lift Operations or Ski Patrol.

Powder Ski & Ride Team FAQ

What is the difference between the Freeride Team and the All-Mountain Team?

While both programs aim to build talented skiers and riders, they focus on different goals:

The All-Mountain Team is built for those who want to master every inch of the resort. This program emphasizes versatility, developing a multi-dimensional skill set that applies to any condition or terrain. This is built for kids who want to develop skills alongside friends. Some kids will decide to move from the All-Mountain Team to the Freeride Team as their skills develop and interests change.

The Freeride Team is designed for athletes with their sights set on competing. This program is competition-focused, specifically preparing athletes for IFSA (International Freeskiers & Snowboarders Association) events throughout the region.

How are ages determined for the Intro Programs?

Our Intro programs (Intro to All-Mountain and Intro to Freeride) are designed for our youngest skiers and riders, ages 5–6.

To participate, athletes must be within this age range by the start of the program on January 2, 2027.

How are ages determined for the All-Mountain Team?

For our All-Mountain Team programs, athletes are organized into two primary age brackets:

  • Ages 7–12
  • Ages 13–17

Athletes must meet these age requirements by the program start date of January 2, 2027. While kids start split out by age, we will move them between age groups and disciplines based on their skill sets and what they enjoy most, whether that’s competition or progression.

How are ages determined for the Freeride Team and during Competition?

To standardize competition levels, IFSA utilizes birth-year brackets. To be eligible for a specific division, athletes must fall within the designated age range by the start of the program on January 2, 2027.

  • U12: Athletes aged 11 and under.
  • 12–14 (U15): Athletes aged 12 to 14.
  • 15–18 (U19): Athletes aged 15 to 18.
What will my child learn in Freeride?

Freeride programs are designed for advanced young skiers and snowboarders who want to move beyond groomed runs and into "Big Mountain" terrain. These programs typically focus on four main pillars:

  • Technical Skill: Mastering steep chutes, tight trees, and variable snow conditions.
  • Freestyle: Terrain park.
  • Air Awareness: Learning how to safely approach, execute, and land jumps or natural cliff drops.
  • Competition Prep: Training for IFSA (International Freeskiers & Snowboarders Association) events, where athletes are judged on Line Choice, Control, Fluidity, Technique, and Style.

The Freeride Team also includes video analysis to help athletes identify areas for improvement and recognize coaching cues.

Do you offer teams for both skiing and snowboarding?

Yes, both ski and snowboard programs are available.

How long are the programs?

Our programs are 11 weeks long. One-day programs take place on Saturdays, two-day programs take place on Saturdays and Sundays.

When do programs start, and what are the dates?

Both One-Day and Two-Day programs start on January 2, 2027, and last 11 weeks.

  • One-Day Programs: Saturdays from January to March (No instruction on January 16 or February 13)
  • Two-Day Programs: Saturdays and Sundays from January to March (No instruction on January 16–17, February 7, February 13–14, March 7, or March 28)
What competitions do Freeride Team Athletes attend?

Freeride Team Athletes may choose the competitions they want to participate in.

Are competition fees and travel days included in the cost of the program?

Competition fees and travel days are not included in the program price. For each competition, our Ski & Snowboard School will provide an estimate for your approval, and then bill it to your account. Costs vary depending on where the competition is held and how many travel days are required.

Is lift access included in the program tuition?

No, lift access is not included in the program tuition. Because our athletes are on the mountain every weekend, we strongly recommend purchasing a Season Pass to get the best value. Alternatively, daily lift tickets can be purchased each day.

What is the "DMI" area?

This zone sits beneath James Peak, our highest point. It’s an expansive area on the eastern shoulder of the mountain, dropping toward Ogden Valley. It features over 1,000 new acres of advanced terrain.

What kind of terrain can I expect in DMI?
  • Wide-open alpine bowls and spines
  • Tight, technical chutes and cliff bands
  • 2,200’ of vertical drop
  • 25+ distinct descent routes
What is happening to the Sundown Lift?

The current Sundown Lift is being replaced by a high-speed quad, cutting down ride times. This upgrade is scheduled to be operational for the 2026/27 season.

Where is the new Sundown Lodge going?

We will break ground this summer. The new lodge will be located southeast of the current lodge.
